Internships are far more in demand than in past years and students have to face some pretty stiff competition when seeking a summer internship. Waiting Too Long To Apply If you havent already abfluged your internship search, what are you waiting for? High school students, college students, and recent grads are all constantly looking and applying for internships, so get started today. If you are applying for fall internships, start sending in materials around June or July. If you are applying for a spring internship, you should be looking in October or November. And if you want a summer internship, y ou should start looking in October of the year prior (just to make koranvers the company you are interested in doesnt have super early deadlines). To best customize your materials, print out the internship or job listing and go through it with a highlighter. Think of it this way they are telling you exactl y what should be on your resume or cover letter in the listing. For example, if the company says they want someone who is social media savvy, make sure your resume speaks to your social media experience. Applying for Only a Handful of Internships Remember, internships are more competitive than ever before. If you only apply for a handful of opportunities, theres a pretty good chance you will not land one. To make sure you land something, apply for at least 10 to 20 internships every two to three weeks. If you hear back from a few and land interviews, you can stop aggressively applying, but remember you want to make sure you dont put all your eggs in one basket. One company said it received 14,000 applications for its internship. Its a tough market. Fail to Follow Company Instructions If you cant follow the application rules, how will you follow the actual rules of the internship? Your application is the first impression you are giving an employer. If you arent following dire ctions, that first impression wont be very positive. By not following a companysspecific instructions,you could end up being placed in the no pile even if you possess all of the qualifications the company is looking for. Make sure to read through their requested process closely. For example, they might post their internships on a third-party website, but they might state in their posting that applicants should go to their website to apply. Forget to Follow Up Once you start applying for internships, follow up one week after you send in your application to confirm the company received your materials and to ask if they need to look at anything else. If you cant find anyone to follow up with, use LinkedIn and try to connect with people who went to your school and work at that company. For example, a copyright is a public record that proves your ownership of the music. With copyright, if someone uses your music without paying or crediting you, you can sue for compensation and lawyers fees. And registered copyright gives you the right to register your work with U.S. Customs to avoid having illegal copies of your work imported into the United States. How Do Copyrights, Patents, and Trademarks Differ? Its worth noting that copyrighting your music is only one step in protecting your work. For instance, registering your works with a PRO (performance rights organization) is also important.  You also need to know that copyrighting your music isnt the same as getting a patent or a trademark. In the United States, copyright protects original works of authorship, including musical, literary, and artistic creations such as songs and albums. A patent, meanwhile, protects inventions. If you invented a new form of musical instrument, for example, you might consider getting a patent for it, but a song doesnt qualify. And a trademark is a recognizable symbol, word or words, such as a brand name, but again, music isnt covered. Patent and trademark arent interchangeable with copyright- theyre three different legal concepts. To protect your music, you should copyright it. How to Copyright Your Music Copyrighting your music isnt hard or expensive. Its simply a matter of filling out some paperwork, either digitally or on  paper,  and submitting your claim. Note that the process described here applies to U.S. copyrights; the process differs in other countries. Follow these five steps to protect your songs and music by copyright in the U.S.: Gather the information youll need to complete the registration process. You can copyright entire albums or individual songs, but note that the price is the same for each. In other words, it costs you the same to copyright an entire 14-track album and all the works contained on that album as it does to copyright one single from the album. Go for bulk when you can to keep the price down. Youll need the album/song titles handy to complete the process.Navigate to the U.S. Copyright Office website and decide if youre going to complete the registration online using the eCo System or if you want to download and print the forms to mail to the Copyright Office (use Form SR). Using the online system is quicker and cheaper, although in either case, the processing time can stretch over many months. Check the Copyright Office website for current pricing. Complete the registration forms. Whether you are using the online system or the paper forms, youll find complete instructions on the form to walk you through the process. Here is some terminology you will need to know:Type of Copyright: Sound RecordingTitle of Work: Name of Your Album or SongContents Title: If youre registering a multi-track recording, each song should be listed as a separate Contents TitleUse the Limitations of Claim part of the form if your album contains any cover songs. The form will allow you to exclude the music, the lyrics or both the music and lyrics. Be sure to do this for any song on your album for which you do not have rights to full and clear copyright. Submit your completed forms. Using the online system, once you submit your forms, you will receive a receipt that acts as proof of your copyright application. If youre using paper forms, you will mail the completed forms with your CDs to the office on the application. They will usually actively move to make your songs work harder. In exchange, the music publisher will get a cut of income generated by your songs.   Role of a Music Publishing Company First off, dont confuse a music publishing company with a record label. While both share many of the same goals for their songwriters, publishers provide a wider array of services. A music publishers role is to make deals with songwriters, promote the songs their songwriters compose to musicians and anyone else who may need a song for whatever reason (advertising, a movie, a promotional campaign, etc.), issue licenses for the use of the songs they represent and collect licensing fees. This work is usually referred to as the administration of a song. Different Styles Some publishing companies are extremely hands-on and get involved in everything from the creative process to heavy promotion. For instance, many publishing companies have a person/department devoted to providing feedback to songwriters on their work, making suggestions for new directions and matching songwriters up for collaborative efforts they think may produce interesting results. Other publishing companies are far less engaged with their clients. They tend to evaluate a composition, make a decision about its profitability potential and then purchase a chunk of its royalties. These companies offer little, if any, creative support to their songwriters and are more reactive than proactive when it comes to seeking licensing opportunities. Although they will still handle the administration of the songs on their rosters, they tend to respond to offers rather than going out and trying to generate them. Types of Companies In addition to there being different styles of music publishing, there are also different types of publishing companies. These mirror the different types of record labels that exist, and in fact, many publishing companies are associated with or own record labels. The types of music publishing companies are: Major - These are the big boys, associated with the Big Three  labelsMajor Affiliated - These are the independent publishing companies that have deals with the majors to handle their licensing administration. Think of these like major distributed independent record labels.Independent - These publishing companies handle their own administration in-house without the aid of one of the majors. They are also self-funded.Writer-Publishers - It is not uncommon for a songwriter to handle his or her own publishing. If the workload demands, they may hire someone to handle to handle their song administration for them, but this person is an employee of the songwriter who gets a salary/hourly rate/flat fee for their work - not a representative from a publishing company that takes a cut of the income generated by a song. How They Make Money For music publishers, earning money is all about licensing fees and royalties. There are several different royalty streams of which a publisher will get a cut, but some of these royalties are not exclusive to them. Depending on the circumstances, they may share a royalty with the master owner. In terms of song ownership, a publisher usually gets a 50 percent stake in a track. In other words, the  original copyright owner (the songwriter) assigns the publisher a portion of the copyright for a song to the publisher. Making a Deal As a songwriter, a deal with a good publishing company can significantly increase your earning potential. Marcus Aurelius 3 rules for life Marcus Aurelius 3 rules for life How does one live well? It’s a question that our fellow human beings have been pondering for centuries. Out of that simple question, many philosophies and religions have been born.But no philosophy does a better job at explaining the ideas for living well in a practical way than Stoicism.The Emperor-Philosopher Marcus Aurelius, once the most powerful man on earth, was also a practitioner of Stoicism. Marcus wrote a collection of thoughts, ideas, and rules for life in what was later published as Meditation.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!  He wrote the things in that book for his own use. He was practicing the philosophy of Stoicism. I read that in  The Inner Citadel  by Pierre Hadot, a book that analyzes  Meditations. In that book, I also read that Marcus had 3 rules for life that are found throughout Meditations.Hadot identifies the 3 rules for life of Marcus Aurelius as the following concepts: (1) judgement (2) desire (3) impulse toward action.As I was reading The Inner Citadel, I had difficulty grasping what Hadot meant by those three concepts. He does not tell us what to  do  with this information. He only says that Marcus Aurelius’s work was dominated by three rules that are based on judgment, desire, and an  impulse toward action.Because when I talk about “rules for life,” I think about  directives. I think about “do this” and “don’t do that.” I use these types of rules in my life all the time. I look at rules like shortcuts that make life simple.By this, I do not want to minimize the work of Hadot. In fact, I think his analysis of philosophy is the best that I have ever read. His conclusions about Stoicism and philosophy are spot on.  And if you want to study Stoicism,  I recommend Hadot’s work. But it’s not a light read- even for well-read people.That’s why I sat down to translate the 3 rules for life of Marcus Aurelius , as found by Pierre Hadot, in plain English. Here they are (for every rule, I mention a Marcus Aurelius quote that explains the idea):Rule 1: Aim for pure judgment of events”Suppress the value-judgment (which you add), and the ‘I’ve been hurt’ is also suppressed. Suppress the ‘I’ve been hurt,’ and the harm is suppressed.” (Book IV, 7)We need to put that quote in context. Marcus realized that we make judgments about everything. But instead of making a pure judgment, we make value-judgments.We add a personal twist to our judgment. In the above example, Marcus talks about when something bad that happens to you. In that case, you can say, “So and so happened to me.  And that hurt me.”The last sentence is the value-judgment  part. So when you drop that last part, you don’t let the bad thing to make an impact on you. The event merely happened.  The end.Let’s say you lose your job. What’s worse? The actual event of losing your job? Or you, worrying that you will never find a new job. Of course, it’s the last part- the worrying.When you make a judgment like that and give meaning to events, you’re not making a  pure  judgment. So remember to look at everything that happens to you for what it is.Did your partner cheat on you? Did you get ill? Did you lose money? Did people make fun of you? Stab you in the back?The events  themselves  can’t hurt you if you don’t let them. Hence, aim for pure judgments of events.Did something happen? Fine. Do something or  move on.Rule 2: Only desire what’s inside your control“Love only the event which comes upon us, and which is linked to us by Destiny.” (Book VII, 57)In his  Meditations, Marcus continuously repeats to himself that most things in life are outside of his control. He realized that life is unpredictable. In 2000 years, nothing has changed about that.Shit happens to you all the time. Instead of resenting it or desiring a different life; work with what you  have. We all know this piece of advice.“If life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” so the overused platitude goes. Marcus takes it one step further. Instead of making the best of what happens to you, LOVE it.He knew that most of the things we desire are outside of our control. Look at what you desire. More money? A social media following? A better job? A new car?Or maybe that your partner will always love you? That you always keep your friends?He desired none of the above. He only desired  what’s inside his control  or what happened to him. He had faith in something bigger than him. What happened to him happened for a reason.Most things in life that happen are not up to you, my friend. And Marcus realized that like no one else.  Only desire what’s inside your control.Rule 3: Act according to the common good”In the first place: nothing at random, and nothing unrelated to some goal or end. Second, don’t relate your actions to anything except an end or goal which serves the human community.” (Book XI I, 20)Remove impulses from your life. Make your actions purposeful and never waste your energy on nonsense. Have a goal.This is what Marcus is saying in the above quote. To many, it sounds like too much control. “OMG. This is OCD.”That may be. If people want to waste their time on this earth let them. Marcus didn’t care for those folks. And neither should you.We are here for a reason:  To make things better.And that’s why so many people are drawn to the writings of Marcus Aurelius and other Stoics. They wanted to make the world a better place.I can’t think of a more noble goal than that. It is now up to us to keep this philosophy alive. The interviewer starts talking about the perks of the company and its culture. They may also go into why they work there. A better sign your interview went well is when they discuss the date you would start if hired. If they had no interest in you they never would have gone into such detail. Building a business is creative work Despite their inherent differences, dancing and starting a business share the need for creativity. The desire to try and know everything is what drives me forward. I can’t know everything, of course, but it’s the thirst for knowledge and the desire to put my best foot forward for my customers and my employees that drives my success. Understanding your own drive will help you survive a big transition. The unknowns can make you doubt yourself or feel discouraged, but taking a moment to journal or talk through concerns can help you get rid of the clutter and remember your “why.” 5.
